On Monday, June 30, 1997, John L. Sawyers, M.D., performed his final scheduled surgical procedure as a professor of surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Attending surgeons for the procedure, a transhiatal esophagectomy, were Dr. Sawyers and Ken Sharp, M.D., Associate Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of General Surgery. Assisting Drs. Sawyers and Sharp were Chief Resident Ben Peeler, M.D., and Trey Conners, M.D. (PGY-2). Dr. John L. Sawyers was Foshee Distinguished Professor of Surgery, Emeritus, Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Director of the Section of Surgical Sciences for eleven years (1982-1993).
